ATS & Keywords

An ATS reads your resume differently than a recruiter does. Here is how to help both.

Applicant tracking systems strip formatting, extract text, and match it against job requirements. A resume that is readable for software is usually readable for humans too.

ATS parsers prefer plain structure

Most systems extract text from standard section headings like Experience, Education, and Skills. Tables, graphics, columns, and unusual labels can confuse the parser.

Keywords matter, but context matters more

Matching exact terms from the job description helps, but only when they appear naturally. A skills section full of copied phrases with no proof looks suspicious to recruiters.

  • Use standard job titles and section names
  • Include relevant tools and skills where you have used them
  • Avoid headers, footers, and text in images

Test your resume by stripping the formatting

Copy your resume into a plain text file. If the order makes sense and the key details are still clear, most ATS parsers will handle it well.
