A thoughtful follow-up email can keep your application top of mind.

Following up after applying shows genuine interest, but timing and tone matter. A polite, brief message a week or two after applying is usually appropriate.

Wait long enough before following up

Give the hiring team time to review applications. One to two weeks is a reasonable window unless the job posting states otherwise.

Keep it short and specific

Restate your interest, mention the role, and ask about the timeline. Avoid asking for a decision or sounding impatient.

  • Subject: Following up on [Role] application
  • Mention the role and date you applied
  • Ask about the hiring timeline
  • Thank them for their time

Know when not to follow up

If the posting says no calls or emails, respect that. Multiple follow-ups can hurt your chances more than one well-timed message can help.
